Taking a Family Road trip along the Murray River
A popular choice for many families to see and experience new places together is to hook up a caravan or camper and hit the road. We often look back at our time caravanning and touring around the southern states and in particular our time spent in regional Victoria. We have lots of great memories. Featuring some epic road trips, amazing National Parks and many family friendly attractions- all just a stones throw away from the capital city of Melbourne! We nickname Victoria the ‘fun state’. Victoria is definitely a place that offers a lot and guarantees something for everyone and we could definitely see us calling Victoria home one day for that very reason. We cant deny that the bright lights and busy streets of Melbourne wasn’t an exciting place for us when we visited- we loved it! But we usually tend to enjoy a more relaxed atmosphere for a bit of R&R- in the bush, near a beach or beside a river. The kids love to have the freedom to run around and enjoy nature. Its great to roll in and set up camp somewhere so our whole family can feel relaxed and enjoy the surroundings. I guess this is why the Murray River region of Victoria is on the list as one of our family’s favourite destinations.
We first got a taste of the Murray River Region as we crossed from our home state of NSW to Wodonga. The Snowy Mountains, the Goldfields and even Melbourne were all within an easy days drive from the border- but we were more focussed on exploring the river area first.
As our family travelled west with our camper in tow through the pretty towns of Yarrawonga and Cobram we came to the historic port of Echuca. It was here that we got our first real look at the amazing restored Paddle Steamers gracing the mighty Murray River. These are a big hit with visitors and you are spoilt for choice as to which one to hop aboard. From short trips along the river to full buffet dinner river cruises- an experience on one of these steamers has to be included on everyone’s bucket list. A wander through The Holden Museum and a visit to the Echuca Historical Society Museum are two great examples of some family friendly activities to keep you busy.
Travelling onwards we passed through the lovely town of Swan Hill and on to Mildura. A bustling town with lots of attractions and plenty of interesting places to visit within an hours drive- including a trip to see “Big Lizzie” at Red Cliffs, Orange World and of course a drive out to Wentworth to see where the Murray River meets the Darling.
The whole Murray River region boasts plenty of quirky little towns, boutique wineries, plenty of accommodation options and much more than just a handful family friendly attractions to enjoy. Its a perfect spot to spend a long weekend, spend a family holiday or just simply a place to take your family for some fun!
